Happy riding!
Hi Iain,
ReplyDeletewe met in the Hostel in Sucre the evening before you left. We had a (how it seemed to me) good conversation while you were packing of the road again. That day you recommended the Easter Island for a stay to me. Now I asked my travel agency in Germany and was surprised by the price (less than 600 €), which really made me think about going there.
My question and reason I am contacting you:
How many days did you stay on Rapa Nui or how many days would you recommend?
Thanks previously and always a good ride.
Cheers
Carsten

DeleteGood to meet you too. I spent just under a week there, flying out on the Monday 9am flight and back on the Sunday 2pm flight, which gave me about 5 and a half days on the island which was a good period. Enough time to see pretty much everything without feeling rushed and definitely not bored. You could trim it by a couple of days if you wanted/needed to.
There's a lot to see within walking distance from the small town (including sunset viewing spots, one of the volcanos where the bird man cult took place and an ahu with maoi).
Then there are full day trips round the island which take you to the main sights and give you some of the background / history, which is a good and efficient way to see many of the sights.
If you want to see the sunrise you need to get to the north of the island which requires a vehicle and you can also hire bikes / motorbikes / quad bikes and cars fairly cheaply, especially if split amongst a few people. You can also then use this to get to some of the sights you don't get taken to on the full day tour.
There's also diving, snorkelling and surfing that you can do (although I didn't). And it's just a nice place to relax, enjoy the good weather and the laid back atmosphere.
I've written a bit more about it here - http://undiariodelamotocicleta.blogspot.com/2014/06/easter-island.html
Good luck in the school and enjoy the travels afterwards. Maybe see you on the road.
Best,
Iain

ReplyDeleteThank you very much for your fast and very detailed answer. That made me really want to go there. But obviously you convinced me in Sucre back than. I just wasn't quite sure how many days to stay and what to do. But it seems as if there is plenty of stuff to do. And much more than it seems when you watch the island on google maps. Thanks for the hint
Always a good ride and greetings to Lena.
Take care.
